Monster Hunter Now, Niantic's latest AR effort, is now available for iOS and Android
Niantic's latest AR effort is now available for iOS and Android. Developed in collaboration with Capcom, Monster Hunter Now sees you heading out in the big wide world in search of beasties to defeat in battle, whether that's solo or with your pals.
Much like the main entries in the series, Monster Hunter Now sees you engaging in the cycle of fighting creatures and gathering resources to upgrade your weapons and equipment. During these battles, you tap to attack and swipe to dodge incoming blows from your foe. It's relatively simple but, in my brief experience, feels much more involved than Pokemon Go.
Outside battles, you'll spend your time walking around the real world, exploring different habitats for various monsters to fight. You can even use an item called the Paintball to mark a particular creature and then fight it at a time that's more convenient for you if you're in a rush and can't stand around at that moment.
Discussing the launch, Kei Kawai, Niantic's Chief Product Officer, said: “Monster Hunter Now is the perfect combination of Niantic’s philosophy of exploring the world and the sheer fun of hunting and battling monsters together.”
“Designed with the mobile experience in mind, the game is easy to pick up and play, but hard to master. We hope it honors this storied game franchise and delights fans for years to come.”
Ahead of the launch, the game racked up an impressive three million pre-registrations, suggesting plenty of folks are keen to step outside and slay some monsters. However, while that's a healthy number, we've seen plenty of Niantic games fall by the wayside in recent months, so let's hope Monster Hunter Now doesn't suffer the same fate.
